My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir by Clarence Thomas
My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir

liberalmormon, February 27, 2009

Coming from a liberal attorney, I went into this book having a very low opinion of Clarence Thomas, especially because I had just finished "Strange Justice", a highly critical book about Thomas.
This book gave me a better understanding of where Thomas came from and what made him so bitter. He is still a horrible and unqualified jurist, but as a person, I sympathize with the the struggles he went through...and it leads one to wonder, how he can sleep at night, knowing that others are going through what he did, as he turns a blind eye...

The Catcher in the Rye by J D Salinger
The Catcher in the Rye

liberalmormon, February 27, 2009

Somehow, I did not read this book in high school and its unfortunate that I had to wait this long to read such a wonderful book.
My wife and I constantly argue whether the theme of the book is "loneliness" (my argument) or "alienation" (her argument). Obviously, it's both, but it is a great book to discuss!

The Informers (Vintage Contemporaries) by Bret Easton Ellis
The Informers (Vintage Contemporaries)

liberalmormon, February 27, 2009

This was an interesting read, but I hesitate to recommend it. One of Ellis' stylistic choices in this book is to give the reader no idea which character he is reading about, chapter to chapter, until a few pages into each one. I am sure some find this "hip" or "interesting" but seriously, its lame...It's actually frustrating--frustrating and lame. Also, the mutiple stories have little, if anything, to do with each other...its like Ellis became bored with the primary plot and decided to head into a completely new direction, with completely different characters...The more I write about this book, the less I like it...so I better stop.
