V Is for Vengeance (Kinsey Millhone Mysteries) by Sue Grafton
V Is for Vengeance (Kinsey Millhone Mysteries)

librarilyn, January 17, 2012

Sue Grafton is not just an author, she is a craftsman which, perhaps, explains why we must wait so long for each installment in this series. Each one is worth the wait. Kinsey sees a woman shop-lifting lingerie and reports her. This seemingly innocuous act sets in motion a chain of events which none of those involved saw coming. Told from various points of view, the reader is given a glimpse into not only Kinsey's life but into other characters who are not so directly involved. An interesting and informative look at the high-stakes business that shoplifting can be.

Best Friends, Occasional Enemies: The Lighter Side of Life as a Mother and Daughter by Lisa Scottoline
Best Friends, Occasional Enemies: The Lighter Side of Life as a Mother and Daughter

librarilyn, January 11, 2012

A definitely light-hearted glimpse into the life of popular author, Lisa Scottoline. Rather than a cohesive novel, these stories are more random observations on life as a woman, a mother, and a daughter. Her own daughter, Francesca Serritella, an entertaining writer in her own right-write? (sorry) has submitted some of the chapters. I would have liked to hear more from her. All-in-all this is a quick, fun read for women of all ages.

The Talk-Funny Girl by Roland Merullo
The Talk-Funny Girl

librarilyn, January 1, 2012

Roland Merullo is an amazing storyteller. This tale of Marjorie, a 17 year old whose hard-scrabble "Christian" family has raised her to speak in a dialect particular to only themselves, employing some bizarre forms of abuse in the name of their religion is shocking, inspiring, and very hard to put down.
