Faith Under Fire: An Army Chaplain's Memoir by Roger Benimoff
Faith Under Fire: An Army Chaplain's Memoir

lmcgee, August 7, 2009

Faith Under Fire: An Army Chaplain's Memoir is the story of Roger Benimoff, who spent two tours of duty in Iraq as an Army chaplain. His faith is severely tested by the horrors of war. Returning home, he discovers that he is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

It has given me a much better understanding of what our brave men & women go through in Iraq and Afghanistan. My thanks to all military personnel for everything they have done for me and our country.

When the Heart Waits: Spiritual Direction for Life's Sacred Questions (Plus) by Sue Monk Kidd
When the Heart Waits: Spiritual Direction for Life's Sacred Questions (Plus)

lmcgee, July 16, 2008

Sue Monk Kidd writes about her midlife spiritual crisis when everything around her had lost its meaning. She found that there was no easy or quick fix; she needed to engage in contemplative waiting. She compares this process to the life span of a butterfly -- how it must first spend time in its cocoon before emerging as a beautiful butterfly.

I began to understand that I have been in a period of contemplative waiting for many years. Years in which nothing seemed to happen. But I know that God has been using this waiting period to refine me. Reading this book gave me the strength move forward.

Here If You Need Me: A True Story by Kate Braestrup
Here If You Need Me: A True Story

lmcgee, May 22, 2008

This is the heart-warming story of Kate Braestrup, who is the chaplain for the Maine Warden Service. The one quote from the book that sums it all up is:

"...I have a job that mostly requires me to just show up, shut my mouth, and be."

This is the essence of what Kate does so well and what we all should do when someone is in need. God bless you, Kate, for what you do.

The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--And How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World by Steven Johnson
The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--And How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World

lmcgee, September 5, 2007

"The Ghost Map" is the fascinating story of the 1854 cholera epidemic in London. It tells how the epidemic started, and how two men, Dr. John Snow and Reverend Henry Whitehead solved the riddle of how cholera spread throughout sections of London.

This book is exceptionally well-written and deserves the Pulitzer Prize.

This book is a must read for those interested in time travel and Scottish history. I had a difficult time putting this book down at bedtime.
