Modern Chess Openings by Nick De Firmian
Modern Chess Openings

locoluck, June 4, 2009

Would you like to learn the major lines in Chess Openings? Do you want theory analyses about those lines? Then this tome is for you. Many of the well known and well played lines for Chess are covered in depth. And even some of the lesser known and played lines get coverage. One major glitch to this work, however, is the relatively sparse comments on the longer lines. And there are some glaring editorial errors in both the Chess charts, comments, and moves (the reason for the 4 out of 5 rating). But ardent players will no-doubt find and correct them and fully enjoy this remarkable book on Chess Openings. Highly recommended for Novices and Experts alike.

Scrabble Wordbook by Mike Baron
Scrabble Wordbook

locoluck, June 4, 2009

This easy to comprehend and fun to read tome of Scrabble Word Lists is quite useful in the high-scoring, word-making process. Its pages are chock-full of little known words and neat quirks and information aplenty. And while some may prefer to have the meanings provided, this dictionary is definition free and in being so, doesn't waste any space using them.
Alas it does have its downfalls. One that sticks out immediately is the fact that there are no references to the longer words (ten letters or more) that would be helpful in deciding disputes on spelling them (and this is the reason for the 4 out of 5 rating). But that aside, this work is very engrossing and you may find yourself perusing the pages throughout the day or night, whether playing or not. For any Scrabble player or word-smith or just the curious, this is easily recommended.
