The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin
The Orchardist

There are few examples of truly great Pacific Northwest literature, but this is one of them. The author successfully evokes a sense of place and time, while weaving together a story that calls into question our typical notions of justice and compassion, family and loyalty, happiness and love.

Here If You Need Me: A True Story by Kate Braestrup
Here If You Need Me: A True Story

maren, January 1, 2012

Braestrup describes her journey as a chaplain for a public agency in Maine with wisdom that can only result from the experience of meeting people in their moments of greatest joy and greatest sorrow. While I didn't always share her perspective on things, she contemplates her experience with honesty and openness that draws you in and invites you to consider your own deeply held values.

The Dirty Life: A Memoir of Farming, Food, and Love by Kristin Kimball
The Dirty Life: A Memoir of Farming, Food, and Love

maren, January 1, 2012

The author perfectly blends her experience with the local food movement and the challenges of a young relationship. It comes across as refreshingly honest without being overly sappy or too self-absorbed. I simply enjoyed the book, but it also seems like it could be a relationship self-help book for those individuals who wouldn't be caught dead reading a relationship self-help book.
