As an adventure story, "Cliffhanger" is different from many of its contemporaries. Alex decides on his own to rescue Grits, but his father goes with him up the trail to the cliff. As his father holds the safety rope and calls out directions for climbing, Alex scales the cliff. He works with his father to save his dog. Unlike many heroes in children's books today, Alex works with an adult, instead of against or without them. The illustrations are clean and simple. Overall a good storybook to introduce children to working with others to help those in need.
