Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson
Suite Scarlett

marjolein, July 1, 2008

Scarlett Martin lives with her parents, sisters Lola and Marlene, and older brother Spencer, in a five story high, run down art deco hotel. It sounds chique when you hear someone is living in a hotel in New York City. But the hotel has known better days. There aren't many guests and the only staff is the family. Every member of the family is in charge for one of the suites.

One day, a very excentric guest checks in, Ms Amy Amberson. Through the book we learn more of the excentric past of her... Ms Amberson takes Scarlett under her wing. And she takes also another thing under her wing....when the theatre group of Spencer gets in trouble and has no rehearsal space, Ms Amberson knows what to do..And then Scarlett falls in love with one of her brothers theatre group actors..

Suite Scarlett is an excellent and very artistic piece of ya fiction. I think it was very different if you compare it with most of the ya fiction.

This was not the usual high school/romance/drama story. This was an excellent story of an (in my eyes) lovely hotel in New York City. Combined with real characters and lots of style and a big part for theater. If you love theater and New York,(as I do) this is a perfect original and very interesting read. If there really was a Hotel Martin in New York, I would certainly stay there. This would be also a good plot for a movie!

Model: A Memoir; Pretty Girl. Ugly Business. by Cheryl Diamond
Model: A Memoir; Pretty Girl. Ugly Business.

marjolein, July 1, 2008

The modeling industry in New York is an issue that is frequently used in ya fiction.( The interns; Fashionistas, The Violet series by Melissa Walker, for example) But not many times, a real model writes a book about how it really is.
The author of the book Model, a memoir is Cheryl Diamond. When she was 14, she came to New York to become a model. In the book she describes with a good sense of humour the modeling world from inside. You read about how people in the modeling industry treat models, and that it is definately not a glamorous world. And Models is also a story about persistence and surviving in the urban jungle of New York.
It thought it was a good and interesting book!

First Daughter: White House Rules by Mitali Perkins
First Daughter: White House Rules

marjolein, May 18, 2008

Living in the White House, i can't imagine anyone who doesn't want that.
In the second book in the First Daughter series by Mitali Perkins, First Daughter Sameera presidential parents, cousin Miranda and dog Jingle move into the White House. Sameera has to say goodbye to Bobby, who is moving to India to see his ill grandfather for the last time. Sameera hopes he will call or mail her..but she has to be very patient.. Her blog is very popular, but there are commenters who have the opinion that she is just a pampered and spoiled First Daughter. It is also great to read when Sameera and her mum go undercover to visit a public school, because Sameera really wants a REAL school to go to, instead of a private school and tutor. and will everything will be happy in the end with her and Bobby?
This was just a great book! It is not the usual ya/teen fiction. This book has a message and a deaper meaning. It is also a book with message for better understanding of other cultures and that is what i really like to read! (since i was a kid , i am always interested in learning about other cultures) I am looking forward to read the other two books in the series, and hope to read the other books of Mitali too!

Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty by Jody Gehrman
Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty

marjolein, May 7, 2008

Confessions of a triple shot Betty tells the story of Geena, her friend Amber and her cousin Hero, who are working beside school in the coffee drive in store called Triple Shot Betty.
Amber and Hero are not really good friends in the beginning, Amber is a wild kind of girl, Hero is a posh girl who gooes to boarding school.
Hero is not allowed to date guys before senior year, but she really wants to go out with the Italian guy, Claudio.
When the girls are invited to a party of schoolmate John, things are walking out of hand...

I absolutely liked this book. It is about friendship, one of the best things to read about. There are a lot of characters in the book, but its never confusing. This is a perfect summer read. The end is just great, then the story is really at a peak!
