I started and finished A Sense of Direction in one evening; I couldn't really stop thinking about it, so I couldn't put it down. I found it...

With all the media hoopla over 12/21/12 as the end of time supported by Nostradamus predictions and the maya calender coming to a end...according to the Peoples Almanac 1975 Nostradamus foretold Battle of Armageddon takes place between Nov 23 and Dec 21 1999. "with victory the world enters upon a Age of Peace. Not until the seventh millennium will the destruction of the earth occur". My point is it seems Obvious there must be some Interpretations of his work which disagree and they cant all be correct. The Calender according to many natives of that land is merely ending and a new one would have been made if their Civilization existed unchanged till now. I do believe in "Extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of the crowds" like C.Mackay who wrote the book by that name[*****], so on the approach of that day I will stay indoors to avoid possible reactive "crazies". As to Nostradamus himself apparently he was impressive enough during his life to command the attention of most the world, and many of his predictions do seem to be extraordinary accurate. He deserves serious study.

I have recently reread this book and own it but I rate it very poor for many reasons not all listed here. First it is written by a man who is a outsider to the Occult as much as it appears that he is a leader in the "field". He had one small Experience which led him to postulate his sixth sense theory- hardly enough to justify any real claim to a personal working wisdom of all or any great part of occult matters derived from experience. He is good at writing and yet presents much as such and so yet it is his educated well written style that lulls the person not well read in these matters to miss much of which is misinforming misinformation and opinion. He comes to his conclusions of others by attempted logical reasoning and not experience. His comments on A.Crowley really show this. and on others...I find him the most well known respected man spewing so much misinformation he might actually believe as to cause one to weep and so I rate him the worse as it is harder for the average man unread of the things he visits in this book to know the difference. The only thing about him I like is his respect for Robert Graves who in his own words in the book reveal Colin Wilson as another searching soul and suck up to Greatness which he can only postulate about. I recommend a good study of subjects he touches on elsewhere and then revisit this little gem of misinforming theoretical and flawed historical piece written in a fine manner and judge for yourself. To agree with C.Wilson you would have to say Rasputin was Genuine and not lustful and Crowley was mostly a showman...remember Crowley split the golden dawn as the Leader was a lying man who pushed the Book of Abramelin the Mage he found in a bookstore as if it was ordained to him from the secret chiefs and used it to claim leadership. Crowley admits his flaws over and again in his autohagiography and admits at his death many things he could not solve, as to the true meanings of some Tarot cards. Not a I know the answer to it all guy at all. Also Colin Wilson Seemingly has no real Mountain climbing experience at least at the time of this writing to be commenting so harshly and so misleadingly on Crowley as the climber Who was one of The top two climbers in the world at that time. shame on him for that.
I am a huge fan of H.P.Lovecraft's and own a hard to find biography on his life...numerous times he was asked by people if this book first mentioned in print in his books was real and he became tired of this question as some refused to believe him. The Dream Cycle of H.P.LOVECRAFT from Del Ray Books describes in the introduction the very thing when a man asks if his theory the great"old ones" didn't merely use him [Lovecraft]as a vessel for their message of impending arrival on earth [this make's no sense as the old one's in Lovecraft's works employed many means to hide from man as "the other gods" show which supposedly punished those who would look upon them. It is to me a delightful little hoax made by a man who cannot be questioned as he is missing{maybe he sensed his hoax might be found out and made it more difficult by his absence} and it derives from a dead author. H.P. LOVECRAFT was one of the most prolific letter writers in history and in these letters it shows that this book being a real thing is absurd. Some will say that he could not be truthful as he would be thought of as either a lunatic, a tool of Satan, or the "OLD ONE'S" would not permit him. As it stands it is neither entirely proved as real or not real, and that's what makes this delightful. A careful study of the "watchers" in some witchcraft traditions will also show they are not same as the old one's of Lovecraft's work though it does lead to the Idea that Lovecraft was possibly aware of this tradition at a time when it was much more hidden and employed it in his fiction.
