The Top 100 Fitness Foods: 100 Ways to Turbocharge Your Life
The Top 100 Fitness Foods: 100 Ways to Turbocharge Your Life

This is a handy-sized ( 6.8 x 5.6 x 0.7 inches) little book that you’ll find yourself referring to over and over. It’s the perfect size to keep in your purse, gym bag or briefcase.

For those of you who want to kick up your exercise routine through optimized nutrition this is perfect. But for those of you like me who are just really getting started and want a something that will help you just choose foods that are better choices…this book is wonderful.

Since we can’t just quit eating food, we need to choose foods that work better for us and we can’t do that unless we have a better idea how foods work. Eating the right foods can have a huge impact on your stamina and performance, but choosing the correct foods can be mentally exhausting and challenging.

This little book is packed with profiles of ingredients so that you can make your best choices. The book is color-coded to make finding the foods you need easier. Each section has information like lists of nutrients, at-a-glance symbols, and it gives you tips to incorporate these foods into your diet. There is even a simple recipe included with each ingredient.

They’ve also included an ailment list at the back of the book and lists of foods that might help with each one. The photography is gorgeous and the information is priceless. This is one of those staples of reference books that you’ll be really glad to have on hand as you’re planning meals and as you’re shopping.

Thanks to Sterling Publishing for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review. I receive no payment for my reviews and the opinions are entirely my own.

Brides of Gallatin County #3: A Dream to Call My Own (Large Print)
Brides of Gallatin County #3: A Dream to Call My Own (Large Print)

I hadn't read the other two books in the series before I read this one, but that really didn't matter. This book was absolutely delightful and I really enjoyed it. The characters and plot were fun and believable, which isn't always the case with Christian fiction. I think anyone could pick up this book and enjoy it. I'd heartily recommend this book and I'm planning on checking out the rest of the series as well as some other books by Tracie Peterson.

While this is Christian fiction, and Christianity plays an important part in the story, I didn't feel like the author was hitting the reader over the head with it. This could make it an excellent choice for the reader who just wants a nice love story without it being x rated.

Thanks to Bethany House for sending me a copy of this great book to review!

The Second-Half Adventure: Don't Just Retire-Use Your Time, Skills, and Resources to Change the World by Kay Marshall Strom
The Second-Half Adventure: Don't Just Retire-Use Your Time, Skills, and Resources to Change the World

I loved this book! I've been really searching for what I'm to do with my time and energy since I am back at home and this book gave me some excellent ideas! Many of you know that I've been in the nursing home for the past two years and have recently moved back out into the world, after some life changing events. I've been struggling to not just fill my time, but to fill my time with something of substance.

This book was an eye opener as to how many opportunities there are for those who are entering the 'second-half' of our lives. While the book is definitely written from a Christian perspective, there are any number of activities that would appeal to anyone looking for a way to go out and change the world even in a small way. I've already gone to The Finishers Project and filled out the questionair and I encourage all of you to do the same. We all have skills and passions that could be put to use in ways we can't imagine!

Please consider this book as a gift to everyone you know that is approaching that 'second-half' of their life...and even those who have been in it for a time. It would also make a wonderful addition to the library of every Pastor, both for himself and to aid in counseling others.

This is a great resource for planning your 'second-half adventure'!

Extreme Dreams Depend on Teams by Pat Williams
Extreme Dreams Depend on Teams

This book was at the same time inspirational, motivational and just plain fun to read. As an NBA fan I loved reading all Mr. Williams stories about basketball as they fit into his theme of team building - there isn't a sports fan around who wouldn't love this book simply from that aspect.

But I also loved reading this book because it's inspirational. It can be applied to everyday life. Mr. Williams message of dreaming extreme and then putting together the team to do that can be used in almost any situation. Whether it's starting a new business, developing a winning sports team, or building a beatiful house, Mr. Williams advice carries through.

Dream big and then lay the groundwork and gather the people around you to make that dream come true.

Personally, I'm at a point in my life where I'm making some big decisions, and I've started applying some of the ideas from Extreme Dreams Depend on Teams. I'm starting by gathering the people who I need to help me achieve that goal. I'm taking the time and doing the planning and then it will happen.

I'd recommend this book to everyone even if just for the sports stories, because I can almost guarantee that anyone who reads this will walk away a bit more inspired and motivated.

Empowered Autism Parenting: Celebrating (and Defending) Your Child's Place in the World by William Stillman
Empowered Autism Parenting: Celebrating (and Defending) Your Child's Place in the World

marta, September 6, 2009

Hooray! Hooray! Finally a book that offers real hope and resources for parents of Autistic children to understand what their child is experiencing, and to make life for themselves and their child easier to manage. Mr. Stillman speaks from experience as a person living with Asperger's Syndrome and as an advocate for those on the spectrum who can't speak for themselves.

An expert and passionate advocate for those with autism, William Stillman has written a commonsense guide for parenting children with autism. He believes that by giving those around the autistic child the information that they need to recognize their child's unique personality, will help liberate them from the culture of fear and the stigma so prevalent in our society.

He demonstrates why the current methods that are used don't tend to work, and offers a ten-step guide for a better, more fulfilling relationship with children with autism. By believing that they are essentially competent to handle tasks, their lives are enriched and so are the lives of those around them.

Many times parents, teachers and well meaning friends and family have many misconceptions about what autism is, as well as what life for and with an autistic child will be. Instead, people with autism are intelligent, insightful and can participate in life to the fullest. This book helps to dispel the myths and offer parents real-world insight.

This book will help you understand where your child is on the spectrum and how you can best help him to be the best he or she can be. He debunks the myths of high priced medications and therapies and offers real-life ideas on how best to help your child.

He also offers a section in the back of the book with tools for helping to manage your child's illness: A prescription medication questionaire, pain and discomfort inventory and a Sensory Sensitivity Inventory. He's also listed websites, books and DVD's that might be useful.

This is an awesome resource for parents, teachers, grandparents and anyone who has someone with autism in their life. This book will encourage and uplift and help you to advocate for them. As the tagline of the book says - "Celebrating (and Defending Your Child's Place in the World"
