The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton
The Nightmare Before Christmas

This is an excellent book based on the classic movie. A must for any Tim Burton fan. I love reading this to my nieces and nephews around Halloween AND Christmas.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures by Anne Fadiman
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures

melbutler02, August 5, 2013

As a medical provider, I found Anne Fadiman's book extremely eye-opening and insightful. Part history of the Hmong culture (the ethnicity depicted in Clint Eastwood's 2008 film, Gran Torino) and part biography of an epileptic toddler and her family's struggles with the American healthcare system, Fadiman describes The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down "not as the book about the Hmong but as a book about communication and miscommunication across cultures." I originally picked up this book to learn more about epilepsy but found myself realizing and redefining my own intolerance to other cultures.

Before I Go to Sleep by S J Watson
Before I Go to Sleep

melbutler02, August 5, 2013

This is one mystery/thriller you won't be able to put down. Christine, a 47-year-old amnesiac, wakes up every morning with no memory of where she is, who she is nor how she came to be this way. The story delves into her relationship with her husband, her friendship with her therapist and her strong feelings that she has a son yet no proof that he ever existed. Like a dark version of "50 First Dates," Before I Go to Sleep left me guessing until the very end.

Trips & Trails Oregon by William L Sullivan
Trips & Trails Oregon

I wouldn't go anywhere in Oregon without my "Trips & Trails Oregon" book! Provides helpful information on sightseeing and hiking, as well as campsites and B&B's. A must for anyone who travels in Oregon.

Hammered, Nailed and Screwed by Kathleen Hering
Hammered, Nailed and Screwed

melbutler02, July 14, 2013

A quick, cute "designer mystery" by an Oregonian author, I found "Hammered, Nailed and Screwed" hard to put down! At the end of every chapter, designer Laura Howard, the story's leading lady, gives simple, designer wisdom. My favorite? "It's a thin line between shabby & chic and shabby & shoddy. Sadly, the same goes for some men."
