I was surprised to see that Fradkin barely mentions Stegner's only non-fiction book on an international subject, a work of vital relevance to today's headlines, Discovery! The Search for Arabian Oil. Written more than 50 years ago, it is a riveting account of Americans working on the Saudi oil frontier filled with priescient insights into the impact of Western technology and culture upon an ancient nomadic culture.
