Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids by Kim John Payne
Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids

michelle marcyk, December 16, 2010

Truly inspiring & eye-opening! Payne looks at more ways than you can imagine that our "too-much-too-fast-too-soon" culture stresses out children, while keeping a sense of humor in his approach to simplify home life. His object is to ease what he calls the "undeclared war on childhood" with less stuff, greater daily rhythm & predictability, calmer schedules, and less exposure to adult concerns (media & conversation). My kids are in college, but I wish this book had been available 20 years ago. I've seen magical results in my friend's family (she put me on to the book): kids who are calmer and more cooperative, parents who really start living into the family life they've always wanted to have. Even when the crazy days come, they've discovered new ways to make space for shared times, created by SUBTRACTING what got in the way of connecting. I saw that one of the local schools is bringing Kim John Payne to Portland in February, for a public lecture -- check out the author's website for details!
