Consolation by Michael Redhill

mmph19, March 20, 2008

Consolation is the kind of novel you don't really want to finish in a hurry. You want to savor the way the author turns a phrase, unveils a character, reveals a plot twist. It's a quiet story with a big story feel. Redhill is a talented writer who thinks like a poet but writes like a novelist. Apart from the joy of reading this story for the way it is written, there is also the pleasure of encountering ideas normally relegated to non-fiction , such as the impact of architecture and history on the residents of urban environments. You might find yourself thinking about the ideas and characters long after you've read this book, and then you might start wondering who the best actors might be to bring this story to the screen.
