This is a great read. Michael Perry braids together the account of his International Harvester pickup truck's restoration with the growth of a new love in his life, and the cycle of planting, growth, harvest, and decay in his vegetable garden. Perry's descriptions are sometimes roaringly funny, other times deeply affecting, but always precise. He's a farm-boy-turned-writer. He cooks, he nurses, he hunts, he's a volunteer firefighter, and he has allowed the circumstances of his life to teach him that one is always a beginner in matters of the heart. Despite a slight tendency toward soppiness as the book winds down, his writing nevertheless flows with astute observations, always expressed with le mot juste. I liked it quite a lot.
