Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

A fabulous take on the Wizard of Oz story. you realize that the Wicked Witch of the West was NOT wicked, just misunderstood. She was singled out as a child because she was different. Love was not given easily to her, even by her parents. She takes a stand for what she believes in and will fight to do what she feels is right...even if that means she must hide. This is NOT the same as the Broadway show of the same name. The characters are similar, but the story is off. The book is much much much better. You learn that Elphaba does have feelings and is not the wicked woman we all grew up thinking she was.

This is a GREAT reference book for tree identifying. The descriptions are very clear without using confusing scientific words. Pictures are given of the tree, leaves and fruit/seed so that you can determine species. I used this religiously in college and I still refer to now just for pleasure.

To Reign in Hell: A Novel by Steven Brust
To Reign in Hell: A Novel

Many may not be able to get through this book because of the conversational tone it has throughout. But if you can, it will definitely keep your interest. I could barely put it down and I finished it in a day or two. It's a fictional and imaginative alternative to the creation story presented in the book of Genesis. Definitely a fun read.

The Phoenix Guards (Khaavren Romances) by Steven Brust
The Phoenix Guards (Khaavren Romances)

Steven Brust did an amazing job with this book! It's not written like the average book. He loves words and he uses them well which just adds entertainment to the story. Some people may not be able to get through it because of the way it's written, but once you get your head wrapped around the complexity of words you'll realize how great the story is. You really get to know the characters and their tendencies. This is a book that I could read again immediately after finishing it and find something new that I somehow missed the first time.

Kushiel's Dart: Kushiel's Legacy #1 by Jacqueline Carey
Kushiel's Dart: Kushiel's Legacy #1

One of the best books I read this last year! Carey has an amazing way with words. While reading I felt like I could visualize the setting and characters like I was watching a movie. The eroticism was intoxicating and beautiful. At times the emotion portrayed brought tears to my eyes! Phedre is such an amazing character! She's intelligent, beautiful, and caring!
