I love books about communities and neighborhoods. Ones with dog stories woven in are even better.
I can't speak for how well it portrays New Yorkers, but I think people are people everywhere. The relationships between people and the dogs was dead on.

Reacher is back. Some of the "old team" is missing, and the others band together to find them out what's happened.
Jack Reacher is an old-school hero. Since leaving the military he's traveled at will, but always manages to find a wrong to right or a damsel in distress to save.
It can be a little too predictable and pat, but mostly, it works.

Boomsday: A Novel by Christopher Buckley

Highly entertaining, a little disturbing, and all-round funny. It will appeal especially to baby boomers, but everyone will enjoy!(5 of 9 readers found this comment helpful)
