I have been a fan of Laurie King since I first stumbled upon The Beekeeper's Apprentice (the first of her Sherlock Holmes mysteries). I have read just about everything she's written and feel that this is the best of her non-Holmes writings. It is psychologically very sophisticated with great character development. The Holmes stories are great page-turners and fun if you like Holmes, but the depth of plot and character development are nowhere near what this novel has to offer, in my opinion.
