I thought of Nikos Kazantzakis' "The Last Temptation of Christ." Rice's book beginning, of course, is an earlier fictional temptation. And her imagined account, even though in the first person male, imbues the female perspective, which is sorely needed in Christianity, especially the Catholic church.
