Unjunk Your Junk Food: Healthy Alternatives to Conventional Snacks by Andrea Donsky and Randy Boyer and Lisa Tsakos
Unjunk Your Junk Food: Healthy Alternatives to Conventional Snacks

osullivanrobin22, July 17, 2012

This book is very easy to read and is visually appealing in presenting good-vs-bad options. We think of ourselves as avid label-readers. When shopping for new foods, we scan the ingredients to see if there are any trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, or other scary items on the list. If so, the box/can/package goes back on the shelf. This is the same approach taken by the authors of Unjunk Your Junk Food. The book includes a tear-out 'Worst Ingredients' chart that you can bring to the grocery store. I used the chart and looked through my pantry"several items had indeed made it past my initial screening, because I found plenty of items with artificial flavors and artificial colors and preservatives in them. Thanks to this book, I will be more vigilant on our shopping trips. It helped me decipher some of the more ambiguous ingredients.

Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss by Joel Fuhrman
Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss

osullivanrobin22, July 14, 2012

Joel Fuhrman has a huge presence in the national media when it comes to diet and nutrition, but he is not a health huckster or a fanatic. His nutrition plan is based on eating real, whole, nutrient-rich foods. This is a revised edition of an esteemed book that has helped thousands of his patients and customers lose weight, fend off disease, and improve their overall state of health. He can help people lose weight fast without painful cravings. I read a lot of diet books (in an attempt to maintain a healthy weight), and Fuhrman's advice is supported by both clinical research and common sense. He really gives people a sense of hope that they can meet their weight loss goals.

Flat Belly Diet! Pocket Guide: Introducing the Easiest, Budget-Maximizing Eating Plan Yet by Liz Vaccariello
Flat Belly Diet! Pocket Guide: Introducing the Easiest, Budget-Maximizing Eating Plan Yet

osullivanrobin22, July 8, 2012

I am a reader of Prevention magazine and have seen other books in the Flat Belly Diet line. This pocket guide repeats the same advice but is a handy option for those new to the diet or who want advice about what to choose at the vending machine, the airport, popular restaurants, etc. Also, if you like meal plans laid out for you this has a 28-day one to follow; plus lots of recipes.

The Quotable Cyclist: Great Moments of Bicycling Wisdom, Inspiration and Humor by Bill Strickland
The Quotable Cyclist: Great Moments of Bicycling Wisdom, Inspiration and Humor

osullivanrobin22, June 14, 2012

This is a handy compendium of quotes about cycling. It can be read it fits and starts. It's not groundbreaking, but I would recommend it as a gift for a cyclist who might like to keep a collection of these sorts of witty lines nearby.

The Enlightened Cyclist: Commuter Angst, Dangerous Drivers, and Other Obstacles on the Path to Two-Wheeled Trancendence by BikeSnobNYC
The Enlightened Cyclist: Commuter Angst, Dangerous Drivers, and Other Obstacles on the Path to Two-Wheeled Trancendence

Cyclists love to complain about drivers, and drivers love to complain about cyclists. In truth, both often commit gaffes--some minor, some monstrous. This entertaining read provides insight into what all the grumbling is about (and how it might be alleviated).
