SInce her previous book, "THE LOVELY BONES" I have been waiting for a new book from Alice Sebold. I had no idea what to expect!
This was a book like I have never read before. I found it distrubing and appauling at times. I never really felt compassion for Helen, but I don't think Alice wanted us to feel compassion for this character. I believe she was just telling a story of a very flawed human being.
This book is worth a read and you wont be able to put it down, because you want to know how the book ends. It takes place in a span of 24 hrs and yet you learn everything there is to know about Helen and her parents. This sheds a light on mental illness that we somehow forget. IT DOES imapct EVERYONE in the family. Alice is a great writer. I do realize that not everyone with appreciate this read. But that is how it is with all books.
Try this book. If nothing else, it will getting you thinking and talking. What more can a book ask????

What a book!!! Cant believe she was only 22 yrs old when she wrote it!! This book will make you cry and make you laugh. It deals with the death of a spouse and from beyond the grave he trys to get help her to move on through a series of letters. The letters are a wonderful touch to this read. This is a must read. Try it before the movie comes out at Christmas time. Believe me ,you will enjoy Holly and Gerry's love story.

I live in MIchigan. I am very intrigued with the Amish. They are all around us. This book gives you an insight into them. It also tells about RUMSPRINGA that I very rarely heard about. Thye dont not talk publically about "running around" another term for Rumspringa. I found I loved the book. During the running around time, they are able to try out the English way off life.
They drink and smoke and some do drugs. If your are intrigued by other cultures give th book a read.
You could also watch "DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND". A documentary that follows amish teens through rumspringa.
I believe you would all enjoy the book and the movie.

What a read!! Love the writing and the book sent chills down my spine. Joe Hill is a very good writing. I believe he writes as well as his famous father Stephen King.
Pick this book up and you wont be able to put it down.
GREAT READ!!
