Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales
Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why

The accounts of survival in this book are fascinating, some even riveting. I read the book with interest and then about halfway into it realized that he makes up theories to fit facts as he goes along -- every new occurrence stimulates a new explanatory theory, to the point that none of the theories were really integrated with each other. Some even contradict each other. He just kind of puts out his ideas out there without a lot of thinking about whether or not these explanations for very different behaviors in survivors make sense. Each one taken separately works just fine -- it's just that there's mostly speculation backing them up.

That said, it's a highly entertaining read and a real cautionary tale to think and plan before you go 'adventuring.'

recommended for a casual read but not for someone really interested in understanding these kinds of escapades...
