I found this book by chance and was so glad I did. This is a very different post-9/11 book and is a touchstone to lots of different threads: tender, mysterious, poignant, faith, and a youthful heroism. It is also a very creative book. I was excited to learn that it is now a theatrical release, but no matter how good, there is no way that seeing the movie can top journeying with this young boy in person. This is a book that I would keep on my bookshelf for many return visits.
I just finished reading Heidi, a book I enjoyed as a child and haven't read for at least 40 years. Much to my delight, I enjoyed it just as much this time around, if not more. Heidi's way of facing the obstacles life throws in her path is fresh and free of social controversy and unrealistic expectations. And by the way, Heidi belongs to a non-traditional family, so it is still timely. Readers should know they are going to get a spiritual lesson through the course of the story, but it's the type of lesson that could benefit us all. I encourage today's adults to go back and relive the fun of reading Heidi for the first time and introducing it to today's children.
Although not a deeply profound book such as many top sellers of the past decade, this book was wonderfully satisfying and provided a lovely picture of a prior era that still lives among the shadows of the modern New York City skyline. It was a combination of a young woman's coming of age, history, romance, and a lot of fun.
