Along with the high praises for lyricism and historical context, I also found the subtle yet encompassing context of martial arts practice and philosophy (particularly Aikido, which has long fascinated me) another essential part of the power and grace of this magnificent novel. Not since Mark Halprin's "Soldier of the Great War" has a story so plumbed the depths of heartbreak and redemption that war magnifies.
