The Book of Three (Chronicles of Prydain #1) by Lloyd Alexander
The Book of Three (Chronicles of Prydain #1)

peterphuhuynh, June 10, 2010

Do we all dream of great adventure, but never get the excitement? This is exactly what Taran, the main character of this book felt before his pig ran away. A chase through the woods leads Taran far from home and into danger, because great evil roams the mythical land of Prydain. Along his journey to find the pig and return home, Taran collects a group of strange but wonderful friends. As Taran's journey precedes, he finds himself battling to beat evil so good may triumph and so his home kingdom does not fall. This book is a fun fantasy to be read by mainly the Middle School audience because the story may bewilder younger readers, but may be to easy of a read for older readers. Since this book has an amazing plot, nothing should stop anyone from reading a great fantasy.

The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
The Outsiders

A Heroic story of friendship and belonging
Ponyboy Curtis is the lower-class youth of Oklahoma with no parents and lives with his brothers. The only people he can trust are his brothers and friends, all of which are in a gang called the Greasers because of their long greasy hair. In this book, Ponyboy and his friends stand up for each other like family. Living in violence and lack of money, Ponyboy's grades drop and gets into a lot of fights. One of these fights end up to far and forces Pony to run away. The rest of the book tells of Pony bonding with his best friend that his severely injured in the hospital. All this fighting that happens in this book is mainly for the pride and standing up for your friends and what you believe. This whole story is Pony's story that he writes of his life for an English project for extra credit to boost his grades in school. I would suggest this amazing story to all readers because it has a lot of action that will keep you wanting to read. This book has got to be read!

Night by Elie Wiesel
Night

peterphuhuynh, June 10, 2010

Imagine your family killed, dying, and taken away from you. Imagine yourself and your whole ethnic group being prosecuted for believing in what you believe. Imagine losing everything you have, your hope, pride, innocence, and maybe even your life. Elie Wiesel didn't have to imagine this because it was reality when his family and him were forced to leave everything behind and go to a concentration camp. This concentration camp was named Auschwitz and then they were moved to Buchenwald. Both there camps treated the Jews very poorly with little rations of food, harsh conditions, hard work and poor health. In this book, Elie Wiesel describes his confrontation with the Nazis, and their sinister behaviors of capturing Jews. Elie Wiesel was a young fourteen year old boy that had not that much knowledge to survive these terrible conditions when his family and him were forced to leave. Night is the amazing but terrifying record of Elie Wiesel's memories of the death of his family, the death of his innocence, and his sad as a an observant Jew confronts the absolute evil of man. What Wiesel wants to tell us is his unforgettable message that the horror in the Holocaust must never be allowed to happen again. I would recommend this book to the Middle School and higher level readers. This book describes much horror that is very frightening to me sometimes. This is a must read!
