The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano by Margarita Engle
The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano

pierpenic23, September 23, 2007

During Hispanic Heritage Month, It is especially important to understand thie history of Latinos accurately. This book gives us a better understanding of the Spaniard role in the slave trade and allows us to understand the cultural mixture that makes up Cuba today and most other Latin American Countries. Many Africans and decendants of Africans in the Americas such as Phyllis Wheatley, Frederick Douglas, Chevalier de Saint-George and many others lost during the Middle Passage. "The Cuban Slave Poet" brings us into a dark, lonely and unknown world of a child with a voice and most important, a message. This book should be included amongst such great works as "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, "The Fire Next Time" by James Baldwin and "The Souls of Black Folk" by W.E.B. Dubois. Everyone should read this.
