The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Help

pjona, January 28, 2012

The birth of yet another American classic. I fell in love with this book ~ with the characters, the language, the story, the writer. Stockett's skill at telling a story so historically and socially complex is stunning. I loved every minute of this page-turner. Telling the tale of both the oppressed and their oppressors with such comfort and intelligence is not an easy task. She does it all without effort, and we are both appalled and inspired. It is the story of race and gender in the American 1960s, and it's the story of a household. This one's a keeper. I promise you won't be disappointed.

The Giving Tree Gift Edition
The Giving Tree Gift Edition

pjona, December 9, 2007

What a perfect time of year to read this book, but it's a delight anytime, for anyone. I fell in love with this story the first time I read it, and I appreciate it more and differently each and every time I reread it. It's a story of love unconditional, the mercy of giving, friendship, gratitude, and devotion. It's a happy story, or a sad one, depending on your perspective. A little boy and a remarkable tree forge a forever relationship that spans a lifetime, and it's an unforgettable tale. Shel Silverstein writes and illustrates this beautiful classic, and I only wish he was still around to give us more of them.
