This book is extraordinary in many ways, the most extraordinary being the fact that Merton didn't want to write it: he did so in obedience to his superiors. It's a great introduction to Merton's life and work, but anyone truly interested in him should also read his personal journals for a more complete picture of this amazing man and writer.
