poohtigger72, February 17, 2009

Daniel Pennac offers a refreshing approach to encourage young people to want to read. In this book, Pennac gives details of his own childhood and how his passion for pleasure reading has grown through the years. Though not all of these rights apply to academic literature, you can be selective in choosing which ones apply to you as a reader. Daniel Pennac offers humor in an easy-to-read text format. This book is a must-read for elementary students and graduate students alike. Immerse yourself in reading and stand up for your 'Rights'.

Monster by Walter Dean Myers
Monster

poohtigger72, October 20, 2008

Monster is an unforgettable, creatively written novel about a young man's struggle with his innocence. As you continue reading, you can almost picture yourself there between the pages of the book. You will find yourself wondering, are we truly 'innocent until proven guilty’? Do our minds choose to block out acts of unbelievable fate? If you love mystery and have struggled with your own conscience, I truly recommend this book.
Imagine your child at sixteen years of age on trial for murder, you want nothing more than to comfort him and pray for him. You ask yourself, “Could this really be happening to our family?” “This cannot be real, am I dreaming?” What would you do if your son was a loving and respectful young man who was on trial for homicide? I think the answer is crystal clear---you would continue to hold your dearest memories and the highest faith in his innocence close to your heart.

Marie M. Clay is brilliant! She has given educators nation-wide useful information in regards to systematic observation and has shared assessment tools that allow classroom teachers to follow students' progress as literacy learners. Marie Clay is an experienced educator whom delivers a fresh approach to observational tasks and has helped me to become more aware of how my students learn to read and write. This is a must-have for all educators!

Witness by Karen Hesse
Witness

poohtigger72, April 14, 2008

The Date: 1924
The Setting: Vermont
Amongst the many interesting and emotionally conflicted characters that exist in this story, the most memorable are 6 yr. old Esther Hirsh and her best friend, 12 yr. old Leanora Sutter. In the time when the Ku Klux Klan was attempting to dominate a small town in Vermont, the non-members of the KKK were determined to find a way to bring peace and diversity back into their community. Esther is a young Jewish girl who is strong willed and has the heart of an angel. Her childhood innocence is what takes the reader to a place of serenity in a time of emotional and social upheaval. Leanora is a young, black girl whom has a close attachment to Esther. They are a source of comfort for each other and they are not afraid to show the compassion they share for one another. Although Leanora saves Esther from an untimely death, the threats from the KKK to move out of town do not cease and her family's freedom is still at risk. This story takes a realistic look at the lives of members of the KKK and the victims of their 'ultimate' power.
