Alternatives to Sex by Stephen Mccauley
Alternatives to Sex

proudmoms, August 17, 2007

This book was a fun, lighthearted read about a gay man who cleans obsessivly in order to cover inner emptiness. He is trying to change his tendency toward shallow flings and find something more meaningful in his life. A married couple who become his clients help him see "the other side" , the long-term relationships that endure the trials of time. There are characters that come and go, each of them with a different perspective on this thing called "love". Although not everything (or everyone) is what it may seem in the beginning, we end up cheering for our hero and hope he finds his own happily ever after.Funny and touching by turns, this is a good book that I really enjoyed reading.

Here They Come by Yannick Murphy
Here They Come

proudmoms, August 15, 2007

Here They Come by Yannick Murphy is a beautifully written story told from the perspective of an unnamed 13-year-old girl living with her eccentric family in the tenements of New York sometime in the 1970's. She is a fearless, mature-for-her-age heroine who leads us on the quirky and very surreal journey that is her life. With characters ranging from the humorous to the violent (including her angry pot smoking older brother and a slightly perverted but harmless hot dog vendor), you'll find yourself engaged throughout. The author uses powerful, symbolic prose to keep the reader interested from page one to the very end. This book will haunt you for days and leave you feeling that you have had a glimpse into a world just underneath our "real" one and you thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
