When I first saw this book at our midwife's office, when I was expecting my fifth baby (fourth born out of the hospital), I thought, "Right--whatever." Then we moved to a new state and I was reading everything our library had on midwives and midwifery because I'd become interested in perhaps becoming a midwife. One of the books featured Ina Mae Gaskin and told a brief bit about her and what she'd done. After reading that, I wished I'd availed myself of the opportunity to read it earlier. When I finally did, I couldn't put it down. The birth stories are a wonderful glimpse into birthing and include the not-so-good along with the spectacular. The rest of the book has lots of practical information for those interested in home birth as well as the practicing midwife. Wonderful book.
