I first came across this book while I was taking college courses, as it was required reading for a particular course.
I have always been interested in history, and this book was like finding a time capsule from WWII. I absolutely loved it. I have read reviews written by other people on different sites and many give great praise for this book while some say it is absolute rubbish.
A lot of the book is based on Fussell's own experience in WWII and carries a lot of personal opinion. I don't know if you can rely on it for large amounts of facts, but definitely a good read. It is always interesting to read a person's individual perspective on something that many readers can't grasp (i.e. the effects of the military/war on soldiers and their personal lives).
Since reading this book, I became a military wife during wartime and understand a lot more now. I am adding this book to my reading list once more...maybe now that I have another perspective of military/wartime, I can find more to enjoy in this book.
