House and Home by Kathleen McCleary
House and Home

readerthinker, August 24, 2008

Even a "readerthinker" enjoys some time away from books that expect to be taken very seriously. House and Home is a quick, fun summer read with a BEAUTIFUL cover and an outstanding first paragraph. It was exactly what my vacation needed.

Unexpected benefit: at times the main character is so neurotic that she made me feel really together by comparison.

Rethinking Religion: A Concise Introduction by Will Deming
Rethinking Religion: A Concise Introduction

readerthinker, August 24, 2008

You don't have to be a scholar to understand and appreciate Deming's analysis of the way the world's major religions are currently practiced. For example, using the excellent definition of religion as "orientation to ultimate reality," the author explains why behavior that seems illogical to outsiders is actually quite logical to a religious adherent.

Lives up to its "concise" subtitle. Wish there were a whole textbook like this!
