Fukan-san, is the neice of the Abbott at Shounji Temple. A newly ordained nun. She has just returned from Kyoto to assist with the aftermath of the tsunami and in doing so,is called to conduct rites & rituals for the dead, many who are children.

Naomi Hiratsuka, is called an Akiramena,'the one who never gives up.' Her daughter Koharu, 12 years old,perished with most of the children at Okawa Elementary School. She obtained her license to operate heavy machinery in order to sift through the mud and debris to find her daughter's body. She returns every day digging through the bleak and desolate ruins.

Gretel Ehrlich, tells the bewildering & difficult stories about: Mizu no michi, 'the path of water.' Hiratsuka & Fukan among them.
