Yankee Dictionary: A Compendium of Useful and Entertaining Expressions Indigenous to New England

rockandhawkbooks, January 30, 2013

Great anecdotal and historical information for a bunch of archaic words and phrases that shaped the New England dialect.

The Collected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers by Robinson Jeffers
The Collected Poetry of Robinson Jeffers

rockandhawkbooks, January 1, 2013

Jeffers wasn't just a poet he was also a storyteller in the old vein of poetics. That is, his works were framed by permanent human values though encrusted with the foibles of the age. While his short lyrics are often hardscrabble political darts they are also abetted by images of strength and beauty. His long narratives were frequently re-tellings of classic or Biblical stories but given the modern human landscape of his time in the early to middle twentieth century. Some have devalued his work because of its didactic nature but one can easily overlook that, though I don't understand why they should want to, because even though his political hatreds are oft on display they are merely underpinnings for an intelligent and powerful mind keen on providing for the truth whether agreeable or painful.

And. . .Howe!: The Authorized Autobiography of Gordie & Colleen Howe by Gordie Howe

rockandhawkbooks, April 2, 2012

A great authorized bio by the real Mr. Hockey. Gordie Howe was the Great One before there was Wayne Gretzky. While both possessed a great scoring touch, each becoming the all-time leader during their careers, Howe played a complete game whereas Gretzky was somewhat one-dimensional with a score-first attitude. The more impressive statistic is that Howe accomplished his feat in a league of only 6 teams filled with elite players.

Creature From Jekyll Island a Second Look At the Federal Reserve by G Edward Griffin

rockandhawkbooks, January 12, 2012

A brilliant book detailing the Federal Reserve's hold on the money supply, it's clandestine history and deceptive guise as a Federal branch of the government and what money really is.
