I bought this book used from Powell's about 3 years ago and promptly forgot about it. We were cleaning out a room and moving a lot of books, when I noticed it in a pile and picked it up. What a GREAT READ. Not only is Better Off covering an interesting concept, but it's engaging and well-written too. It's the story of a couple who go live in a community that has chosen to leave electricity, and much machinery behind. Instead they work the land by hand and horse, raise barns as a cohesive community despite religious and social differences, and basically reconnect with fellow humans, the land, and even books. They accomplish this by turning off the T.V. and being mindful about the technologies they allow into their lives. Eric shares a very personal look at his life without coming across as preachy or condescending, which is refreshing to see from a back-to-the-land type book. A word of warning though: make sure to have a whole afternoon/evening/night to read, because once you get going, you won't want to stop.
Powell's City of Books is an independent bookstore in Portland, Oregon, that fills a whole city block with more than a million new, used, and out of print books. Shop those shelves — plus literally millions more books, DVDs, and eBooks — here at Powells.com.

This book has inspired me to live more simply. I aspire to go off the grid, and be as self sufficient as possible!(1 of 1 readers found this comment helpful)
