Mountain Madness by Robert Birkby
Mountain Madness

sandbar987, February 25, 2008

Mountain Madness is a great read. Robert Birkby avoids the sensationalism that was part and parcel of the coverage of Scott Fischer's death, and instead has produced a poignant and faithful telling of the first 40 years Scott's life -- the interesting part as Scott's friends and climbing partners testify. As a personal friend and sometimes travel partner of Scott's, Robert Birkby had unique access to understanding what drove drove Scott Fischer to live his life and pursue a career in the mountains. With a clear, unsentimental voice, Birkby shares with the reader a picture of the complete man -- a remarkable athlete with a clear drive, but still a person like the rest of us struggling to create a life of meaning, of family, of great friendships and a sense of adventure. This is a great book for anyone who's ever looked at a mountain and thought, I'd love to climb that, whether you made it to the top or not.
