It might not be as great as his novels, but The Outlaw Album: Stories keeps me hungry for Woodrell's Redneck Noire and more characters you can't find anywhere else in fiction.
For all of us Midwest transplants, this novel will ring as true as Kesey and Stafford do for the Pacific Northwesterner. However, Torch is so much more. It pulls us into the lives of people dealing with grief, despair, joy, family and hope. It forces us to feel and think and start asking big questions. Strayed doesn't gift wrap anything. She throws the complexity of life at the reader, allowing you to struggle along with characters who will stick with you long after you put this amazing novel down.
