Howards End (Vintage International) by E M Forster
Howards End (Vintage International)

sarahk1288, January 13, 2012

I read quite a few books this year, and from them I have added to my list of favourites: Wise Blood (O'Connor), The Sound and the Fury (Faulkner), I Henry IV (Shakespeare), etc. But I must be true to myself and say that the best book, the book that embedded itself in my heart, this year was Howards End by E.M. Forster. Like Ishiguro's Remain's of the Day, it was the brilliant cinematic Merchant/Ivory team that led me to Howards End. Their film version, starring Emma Thompsen, Anthony Hopkins, and Helena Bonham Carter peaked my interest in Forster's work. Once I picked it up, I immediately found myself entangled in Margaret's philosophic musings, Helen's passions, and the morphing gap between the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes. It's not what one might call a quick read, but it is worth the time it may take to get through it. I turned the last page and closed the book with a sigh, ready to start it again from the beginning, ready again to wander the musty grounds of Howards End and wonder at its place in the world, to wonder at my place in this world.
