Mahfouz does an excellent job of opening up the daily world of an Egyptian wife and mother, and her family. He describes the inner emotions of the strictest of fathers, who in reality is a player that hides behind his stern facade to keep his structure at home together. This enthralling story is hard to put down once started. It leaves deep hunger for the next and the next books.
