My Abandonment by Peter Rock
My Abandonment

sgreentag, May 17, 2010

Author Peter Rock did his research for this novel based on a true story of a man and his daughter living in Forest Park in Portland, OR. While he couldn't know the moments they lived, you feel as if he does, as you make Caroline's stealthy way through the days and unseen paths of her hidden world. A suspenseful and empathic journey.

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
Shutter Island

sgreentag, February 4, 2010

I'm no fan of mysteries, at least not until now. Lehane knows how to set a scene, both externall and internally. You feel you know the creepy geography of trees, cliffs and rocks as vividly as the hubris, melancholy and intelligence of the protagonist. You think you know them both, the island and the man. No one exploits such certainty as skillfully as Lehane.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
A Fine Balance

sgreentag, January 11, 2010

With its epic scope yet lovingly detailed characters, this masterpiece is both social commentary and intimate portrait. How perfect a book for the oughts -- giving the non-Indian a vivid, unsentimental look at this global neighbor, while painting one of life's bleaker pictures, all the while reminding us of our powers of resilience.
