I was very skeptical of the Harry Potter series at first because it deals with wizards and magic, which sounded corny, but everyone I' talked to who'd read it loved it. When I was presented with the option of reading it as an outside reading book for English, I decided I'd finally give the book a shot. I'm still only on the first book, but I absolutely love it and cannot put it down. It's really surprising to me that I'm into this book, especially since it's not actually written for people my age (I'm 18). Somehow, Rowling is able to make these seemingly simple books interesting to people in all walks of life.
The first book is basically about a kid named Harry Potter who finds out that he is a wizard. He leaves his depressing life and begins to attend Hogwart's School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. There he begins to learn about magic, meets friends (and enemies), and tries to solve the mysteries of the world of magic he never knew.
What I like about the book is that it’s short and easy yet it's still interesting. I like that Rowling constantly keeps a mystery or conflict going, unlike some other books I’ve read, so that I am continually engaged in the story. Sometimes, I’ve tried to guess what will at the end of a chapter, or guess how a conflict will end, but I’m usually wrong because of Rowling’s many twists. Also, if Rowling did not make the story as believable, I would have stopped reading it. What I mean by that is that Rowling creates a highly believable world of magic by using careful detail and a wonderful imagination. Rowling also scatters witty humor throughout the story which makes it even better.
I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone that can read. Even if it would not be your first choice, it’s worth it to pick it up when you have free time because it's entertaining but will not take long to read. As for the person who said that these books should be used as toilet paper, I'd like to know what kind of books you like to read....
