Rose Tremain created a poignant character, Lev, an immigrant to London from an Eastern European country who got into my heart and my head. Lev brought me closer to the immigrant experience of my own grandparents and made me care deeply about what became of him at a time when I was enduring the health crisis of my husband, and the death of a beloved sister-in-law. Rose Tremain writes beautifully and this book is perfectly paced......almost a page turner, yet rich in cultural references with a sub-strata for foodies as well.
