Islam Today: A Short Introduction to the Muslim World by Akbar S Ahmed
Islam Today: A Short Introduction to the Muslim World

smile_qadeem, November 3, 2008

The book is magnificent interms of creating understanding and building a bridge between the two main actors of todays world, i.e Islam and West. the contents of book mainly revolve around cultural and artistic developments and less space is given to other areas of the great muslim empires. regarding the issue of a bank the auther doesn't provide basic information of the real issu to the reader. the cold response of the Arab world to the notorious book of salman rashdi is described by the author that they are orthodox and brelvi sub sect of sunni islam was mainly active. this argument seems to be a bit misleading due to the fact that Brelvis are in minority and vast mejority of south Asians are inclined towards Deobandi school of thought who hold similar ideas as that of Arabs. the reality according to me, is that Arab society by and large is not familier with the idea of processions on roads and chanting slogans and this was the main reason infact Arabs are the muslims who still by and large retain the idea of a pure Islam.
