This book can be described with fear of hyperbole as one of the greatest epics ever written. Though written only in the last century, the moral and literary elements of LOTR have already insinuated themselves into the mythos of western civilization. A combination of lofty themes and entertaining action, this book belongs on everyone's list of essential reading.

A fine biographical work, but by no means light reading.

The author presents Israel not only as the product of broad historical events, but also as a collection of of innumerable settlements, each with its own unique character and background, a most effective means of conveying the spirit which brought the idea of a Jewish State from a distant hope to reality.

In a time when dumbed-down, politically-correct paraphrases are so common, here at last is a new translation fit for serious Bible students. The ESV incorporates the best qualities of the King James and New International versions: A close literal translation that conveys the ancient idiom, rendered in modern English. A fine choice for the beginner and for the scholar alike.
