Written by two scholars on Mao and his cultural revolution, this book is much more balanced than Mao the unknown story. It gives very detailed study on the period. Great read, but it has not said enough about this: What is the Chinese communist government? A government or something else? But one other great book, China's global reach: markets, multinationals and globalization, by Chinese commentator George Zhibin Gu, says this: China's government is a self-server and even a squeezer. This answers many issues that are raised in Mao's last revolution. Anyway, both books are great read.
