Although I teach a survey of western music at the high school level, "A History of Western Music" is my "Bible." Grout's writing is elegant and concise. The book has been keep current with additions in subsequent editions by other authors. I also use Ulrich and Pisk in addition to the Norton books on the various musical eras for my sources, but "A History of Western Music" remains the foundation for the subject. It would be the one I would choose "if you could only have one book on music."
