I read this book since it is on the Virginia's Reader's Choice list for middle school. I was sucked in at the beginning and finished it in that sitting. I was crying long before the end of the book. I live in Roanoke, Virginia, and for our students to have a book that mentioned their town, and places that they kno--I can't even begin to tell you what an impact that has made. I share the title with everyone that I know, young and old. The students are telling all of their friends about the book, and it is constantly off the shelf in the library. In fact, I had to buy it so that I could read it. Very MOVING--for any audience. My husband who works with veterans every day at the Salem VA Hospital is reading it now.

How did Ms. Shafer, ever find this area of the country for her setting?
