Chabon's noir detective novel set in the alternate universe of Yiddish Alaska is simply the best book I've read in twenty years. Original, funny and at times sad, his descriptions of life and characters unwind at a wonderful pace and those critics (The Pittsburgh Post Gazette for example) are so far off in their negativity that I won't even give them more than lip service.
You can read lots of better reviews than mine has to offer but the best test is to read the book and enjoy blintzes, pie, slivovitz all wrapped in a pastry shell of murder gone awry.
