A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire #5) by George R. R. Martin
A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire #5)

By all counts, this is the first book, and series, really, I have read for almost the sole purpose of willing certain characters to die in a slow and painful manner. While this intent is quite opposed to my Buddhist practice, still it's why I continue picking up the next book. Don't get me wrong, Martin has developed quite a cast of characters and world history. In a Dance With Dragons, we get more of a sense of things on the other side of his world and catch up with characters that were silent in Book 4. My biggest criticism is the rapey bloody violent murderousness that characterizes the entire series and these same things are what I understand to be the best parts of the story for almost everyone else. There are surprises and twists galore, rich passages expanding the intricacies of dragons and blood feuds, and histories that stabilize the ground our characters find themselves on. But still I hold my grudges close against those text-people that I know don't exist at all.
