Eifelheim by Michael Flynn

Highly unusual and well written story. You don't usually expect a science fiction novel to be so well-grounded in a historical setting, but this novel is that and more. It puts the reader in the locale and the period with ease. The manner in which the people living there deal with the unusual visitors from space is realistic and fits the time in which they lived. However, if hard science fiction is what turns your screws, this novel won't do it. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.
